While many oppose President Donald Trump for his alpha nature and bold comments, it’s often Democrats who instigate the argument or throw the first punch. A prime example is when multiple people, including an 84-year-old woman, were assaulted while they supported President Trump at one of his rallies on Wednesday in California.

The altercation took place when Alvin Gary Shaw, 33, noticed a group of Trump supporters. The supporters say they didn’t instigate the matter and Shaw just walked up to them and started blowing smoke and yelling profanities. When his tantrum didn’t prevail, Shaw decided to show strength by punching an elderly woman so hard that both her earrings snapped off.

Donna Snow, the elderly woman assaulted, recalled the moment Shaw attacked her, “He took his hand way back like he was going to punch me, and [he] hit me right across the face. Broke my earrings off.”

After the argument turned physical a nearby retired police officer drew his weapon on Shaw as he tried to leave the scene. In the process, Shaw was seen throwing a knife into the bushes before being detained by the retired officers. That same knife would later be recovered by the witnesses involved.

In custody, Shaw would be officially charged with elderly abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery. As for the victims, only one was taken to a nearby hospital for a neck injury they incurred while trying to protect supporters from Shaw.

One supporter at the scene was Cynthia Cantrelle-Westman. She told KTLA 5 she believed Shaw was approaching the group to join them. For most of the day, they had received compliments for their pro-Trump attire which included Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” hat. But Shaw had other plans says Westman, “Instead he was pretty upset and he started using profanity from the minute he arrived. He kept coming over to me and getting in my face, and all I could say was the F-word.”

For Orange County Sergeant Dennis Breckner, he believes the incident could have ended much worse if the retired officer hadn’t been nearby. He told CBS, “This could have been a very serious incident. In this case, this was just two groups that disagree, and while we support people and their using their First Amendment rights to put out their message, we prefer that that remain peaceful.”
