If you have had the unfortunate opportunity, as I have, to have gone through a divorce then perhaps Tuesday night’s presidential debate brought back some unpleasant memories. You may remember the raw rancor, the name-calling, the shake of the head and dismissive laugh, the person in the middle making things worse, and the chill in the side glances and gestures. No fun in Stalingrad.

Well, instead of a failing marriage it’s a deeply divided country and maybe it’s time to end that relationship too. We witnessed in Cleveland Joe Biden calling the president of the United States, in front of the whole world, a liar, a clown, and a racist. Talk about irreconcilable differences.

And we on the Right bear them just as much distaste and outright loathing. So, what do we do? Simple. Like smart couples who use a mediator instead of lawyers, we go into negotiations. Maybe at a new constitutional convention, maybe through Congress, maybe through a national referendum.

Or maybe, if he’s reelected, President Trump calls in Gavin Newsom a week after the presidential inauguration and says, “Wanna be president of your own country?”

The basic plan would be simple. The Left gets the West Coast but we keep our military bases there. New York City becomes an independent city state, kind of like Hong Kong used to be. But that’s just one idea. Maybe these graphics below will work, a kind of loose confederation. Yes, I know, the Articles of Confederation. But something must be done.

The Left and America don’t believe in the same very basic values and social mores anymore. The postwar culture consensus has been replaced by a traditional America sharing the same real estate with a wannabe authoritarian socialist America. It’s like 1859 and there are those in DC, especially on the Right side of the aisle, who realize this.

What’s the alternative? If Trump is reelected then years more of attempted left wing coups and violent riots. If Biden is elected his hard left will try an overreach on something like gun control and the governor of a Southern, Midwestern, or Western state will say, “No. Make us.”

Who do you think would win the Presidency?

If we split both sides get a national government they want and deserve. We get center right, if not conservative, national government for the foreseeable future. The Left gets the road to Venezuela.

Sounds alarmist and ridiculous? Why should America be immune to territorial changes? Poland was once in Russia, Algeria was in France, we were British. West Virginia was in Virginia. Texas was independent. It can happen again and it must.

If we don’t work something out at a conference table it could be worked out on the streets of America, perhaps on the streets of your neighborhood. If that happens the Left will be slaughtered in droves if the administration is Republican. If the administration is Democrat then commanders of military units, after they receive an order to put down an armed rebellion in the Heartland, will have to choose between obeying the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, as their oath demands, or serving the higher cause of freedom. Do we want to put our armed forces through that? For these reasons and more, we must peacefully separate. For a neighbor you hold in cordial distaste is better than an enemy who lives inside your house.
