During her weekly press conference on Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) defended the fact that the House has included cannabis in its coronavirus legislation, adding that marijuana “is a therapy that has proven successful” and is related to aiding COVID-19 patients.

One reporter asked Pelosi, “Republicans and the administration got a lot of heat when they released their bill. Because there was a lot of unrelated things in there, including money for the FBI building, money for defense to replenish the wall. There’s some things in your bill that’s not directly related to COVID, like they’re talking about cannabis or the SALT reduction. Are those things that you’re willing to also strip out of the bill?”

Pelosi responded by pushing pot like it was her job.

“Well, I don’t agree with you that cannabis is not related to this,” Pelosi said. “This is a therapy that has proven successful, and it is by no means of the caliber of money or misrepresentation that remodeling the federal building is for over a billion dollars so that another hotel doesn’t come in there and compete with the president’s hotel.

“That’s what that’s all about,” she added. “That has nothing to do with the coronavirus. So, we’re going to have to come to some compromise on the legislation. I just don’t accept that there’s any equivalence in what you put forth there.”

The Democrat-led House’s coronavirus legislation, which was approved back in May, includes language supporting cannabis businesses and their providers, many of whom have stayed open throughout the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Hill.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) fired back at Pelosi by saying that her defense of marijuana was “incredibly irresponsible.”

“Pelosi just doubled down on her $3 trillion dollar cannabis legislation, falsely claiming that it’s a proven therapy for coronavirus. Hey Nancy, let’s focus on the pandemic. Not pot,” McCarthy tweeted.
