As rioters and looters ransacked Chicago’s Magnificent Mile business district Sunday night, the mayor and the police chief condemned the violence and threatened looters with police action.

But it was too little too late from the same people who had done all in their power to encourage the Antifa and Black Lives Matter scum who were at the forefront of the violence on Chicago’s streets last night. All the anti-Trump and anti-police rhetoric has now come home to roost for Chicago. Hope they’re happy with the outcome.

Once again a left wing city government has to bear the consequences of its own words and actions regarding urban unrest and who are the perpetrators of such agitation. Like Portland, New York, Seattle, and Atlanta, Chicago has only itself to blame for bringing the Weimar Republic to its downtown environs.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said as of Monday morning more than 100 people had been arrested. 13 officers were injured in the unrest, including a police officer hit in the face with a bottle and another who had his nose broken while fighting with looters. “I pledge to pursue these offenders to the fullest extent of the law,” Brown promised. “A heavy police presence will continue throughout the downtown area today and until further notice.” Too bad every action of his city government gives his words little credibility.

“We are waking up in shock this morning,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said. “These individuals engaged in what can only be described as brazen and extensive criminal looting and destruction. And to be clear, this had nothing to do with legitimate, protected First Amendment expression. We are not going to let our city be taken over by criminals and vigilantes.” Too late mayor, you already have. Every looting, every vandalism, every arson is on your shoulders.

She went on, “These same stores that were hit last night were hit previously, not just by looting but by closures related to COVID-19. Stores that were targeted were more than just large chain stores. There are small businesses and restaurants representing our city’s jobs and livelihoods, all of which were in the process of recovering or on the verge of recovering.” This seems to be coming to her as an epiphany. But these are the same type of businesses and innocent people targeted before in this manner by Antifa and Black Lives Matter. Only then, she liked it and encouraged it because it gave her political cover. They went too far this time? Physician, heal thyself.

Media was on the scene “Absolute chaos in downtown Chicago with more overnight looting and vandalism in the Loop,” tweeted Ryan Baker, an anchor at WBBM-TV. “Appears to be coordinated effort with minimal police presence.”

“CPD became aware of several social media posts encouraging looting downtown,” Superintendent Brown said. 400 officers were sent to the region. They did little good to stop the looting.

“This was not an organized protest, rather this was an incident of pure criminality,” Brown said. “This was an act of violence against our police officers and against our city. Criminals took to the streets with confidence that there would be no consequences for their actions and I, for one, refuse to allow these cowardly acts to hold our city hostage. CPD will not stand by as our beautiful downtown becomes someplace that people fear.” You already did Superintendent Brown, when you allowed the first violent march to proceed weeks ago.

Lightfoot insisted, “To those who engaged in this criminal behavior, let’s be clear: we are coming for you. We are already at work in finding you and we intend to hold you accountable for your actions. There is no justification for criminal behavior ever. You have no right, no right, to take and destroy the property of others… this is not anywhere near acceptable.”

Hogwash. Lightfoot just has buyer’s remorse over the actions of groups she has supported and subsidized. Just like in other cities that have encouraged Antifa and Black Lives Matter, Chicago is getting what it deserves and what it voted for.
