On Tuesday night, basketball legend LeBron James wore a fake MAGA hat to demand justice for Breonna Taylor after his team the Los Angeles Lakers suffered a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers in their first playoff appearance.

James showed up to his press conference after the game wearing a red hat resembling the MAGA hats worn by President Donald Trump and his supporters, according to CBS News. While the hat started the same as the Trump version, with the words “Make America,” the “Great Again” part was crossed out and replaced with words that resulted in the hat reading “Make America Arrest the Cops who Killed Breonna Taylor.”

Taylor is the 26-year-old EMT from Louisville, Kentucky who was shot dead by police in her apartment back in March. Despite widespread calls for the police officers responsible for her death to be arrested, they have yet to be charged.

James said during the news conference that Taylor “had a bright future and her life was taken away from her and there’ve been no arrests and no justice, not only for her but for her family. And we want to continue to shed light on that situation, which was unjust. That’s what it’s about.”

James and several of his teammates had been photographed earlier in the day wearing the hats as they left the Disney World hotel, which has been serving as home to the NBA players who are playing right now.

This came after Michelle Obama mentioned Taylor in her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night.

“Here at home, as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and a never-ending list of innocent people of color continue to be murdered. Stating the simple fact that a Black life matters is still met with derision from the nation’s highest office,” Obama said. “Sadly, this is the America that’s on display for the next generation.”

Unfortunately for James, his choice of hat will likely do nothing to help the struggling ratings for the NBA, as an increasing number of Americans are choosing not to watch basketball at all, notably after the sport was taken over by social justice initiatives. NBA ratings are lower than they were before the sport went on hiatus back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Atlantic. If players like James don’t start leaving the politics and social justice nonsense at home, they can only expect the ratings to go down from here.
