Antifa and their kind have an acronym they like to spray paint on police cars they’ve trashed and as illegal graffiti on building walls. ACAB: All Cops Are Bastards (also, All Capitalists Are Bastards). It is an anarcho-communist statement against American civil society. So, I wonder if ACAB also applies to two cops I recently read about.

According to Spokane’s KHQ Q6 News, two off-duty cops were vacationing in eastern Washington, on the Wenatchee River. The men were enjoying the glorious summer weather and, likely, reveling in the respite from their law enforcement work in western Washington, in the riot-prone Seattle area.

While enjoying what had been a quiet Sunday afternoon, the two men, Rick Gilcrist, a Kent Police Department detective, and King County Deputy B. Johnson, saw a panicked five-year-old boy who’d been snatched by the churning rapids.

Without hesitation, the two off-duty cops dove into the icy torrents and swam to the child. They fought the strong current to bring the boy to the shore where they reunited him with his relieved father.

The Kent Police Department released a statement regarding the vacationing cop’s heroic actions: “We are thankful that even when off-duty, our officers regularly show the best character, the bravest actions, and a compassion for those in need. This near tragedy was averted by their selfless character leading to swift actions; their character is why they became police officers in the first place.”

A witness related the events in a Facebook post: “They calmed the panicking child in the middle of the rapidly flowing river for a few minutes, fighting the current and swimming to the shore until the father arrived. The river was moving at such a swift pace I have no doubt that without decisive action, quick thinking, and lack of hesitation these two men showed, while others stood by and watched, the child would have been swept away and ultimately drowned. The actions of both of these men deserve to be recognized and commended as they reflect greatly upon not only their own personal character, but that of the departments that employ them.”

As far as I’m concerned, and at the risk of being sappy, if you’re going to apply such a “universal” acronym to cops, perhaps All Cops Are Brave would better characterize “ACAB.”
