A chilling video is going viral this week showing a man push a woman to the ground on a subway platform in New York City and try to rape her in a brazen daytime attack that happened at 11am.
The New York Post reported that the woman was waiting on the platform for the Q train at around 11am on Saturday inside the Lexington Avenue and East 63 Street train station when the man approached her, according to police.
The horrifying video showed the man on top of the woman as bystanders intervened.
“Hey get off her!” the group yelled at him.
Police said that the woman suffered minor injuries, but refused medical attention. The MTA has vowed to help police track down the suspect, who remains at large at this time.
“This is disturbing and disgraceful. No one should ever have to experience this type of horrific attack in the transit system,” said MTA spokeswoman Abbey Collins. “The MTA is working closely with the NYPD to find the suspect and hold him accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
This comes after New York City has experienced a significant increase in crime over the past few months. Daily Mail reported that officials have linked this spike in crime to crime to the pandemic, a surge in unemployment, civil unrest, and protests. Police data shows that there was a staggering 162 percent increase in the number of shooting victims and a 166 percent increase in the number of shooting incidents during the four-week period that ended on August 23 compared to the same period last year.
In the four-week period that ended on August 23, New York City police recorded 48 homicides, which was a 50 percent increase from the 32 homicides that were recorded during the same period last year.
On top of that, between January 1 and August 23, New York City had 280 homicides – a 35 percent increase from 208 homicides that were recorded during the same period of 2019. Murders were up 58.8 percent in July when compared to the same month last year, and shootings were up a shocking 177 per cent.
Meanwhile, protests against police brutality are continuing all over the country with no end in sight. New York City responded to this by cutting the police budget by $1 billion in July.
