Some of us of a certain age remember the busing controversies of the 1960s and 1970s, when liberals tried to use school children as pawns in their plans for radical social engineering. The successful grassroots pushback against forced busing was the beginning of the emerging 1970s conservative coalition that brought Ronald Reagan to the White House in 1980.

Under the Obama-Biden administration the Left was up to its old tricks, this time trying to do to American suburbs what it tried to do to schools before: mandate enforced racial quotas. Obama-Biden wanted to dictate the racial makeup of private property and homes in the suburbs, claiming (as it did with busing) that the status quo was inherently racist. The proposed edict was called the “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule” (AFFH). It was added by Obama to the 1968 Fair Housing Act in 2015. But the Obama-Biden administration did not count on Donald J. Trump or Ben Carson.

Previously, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), “The AFFH rule sets out a framework for local governments, states, and public housing agencies (PHAs) to take meaningful actions to overcome historic patterns of segregation, promote fair housing choice, and foster inclusive communities that are free from discrimination.” It does nothing of the sort. It’s a neighborhood racial quota system, pure and simple.

It was scrapped by the Trump administration last Thursday when HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson announced he’s stripping the proposed community diktat from the 1968 Fair Housing Act because AFFH “was an overreach of unelected Washington bureaucrats into local communities.”

Stanley Kurtz, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, called the move a “tremendous accomplishment” of the Trump administration. He spoke to media host Mark Levin about the AFFH.

“Very recently, President Trump, with the help of Secretary Carson, have in a very powerful and effective way put an end to AFFH as it was created under the Obama-Biden administration. This is really a tremendous accomplishment. People say that the federal government often is under a ratchet effect, meaning it only gets bigger. Or, maybe if a Republican gets in, it stays about the same, but it never actually shrinks. President Trump, with the help of Secretary Carson, have actually countered the ratchet effect.

“Not only have they peeled back virtually the entirety of the Obama-Biden AFFH rule, this radical overreaching rule, but they’ve even peeled back some layers that had accumulated over the original law, which weren’t really about what was in the law even before the Obama administration began.”

Kurtz said it was a “brilliant stroke on the part of the Trump administration,” and a “courageous action” that illustrated a “radical dichotomy between what Biden is going to offer the suburbs, which is AFFH turbocharged…and President Trump,” who essentially told the suburbs, “I’m not going to mess with your fundamental freedoms.

“Joe Biden is. And there’s going to be choice like night and day.” Let us hope the American people choose the sunlight of a free day over the unrelenting darkness of a socialist authoritarian government.
