The comedian Ricky Gervais is speaking out this week to reflect on his controversial Golden Globes speech in which he called out celebrities for their hypocrisy, making it clear that he has no regrets about it.

While hosting the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards back in January, Gervais held nothing back as he tore into Hollywood stars, calling them out for lecturing the rest of us about politics.

“It was quite zeitgeisty,” Gervais told Yahoo Entertainment.

“I suppose because people were tired of being lectured by multimillionaires telling them to recycle when they’re flying around in private jets. So I think people were tired of the hypocrisy.”

He added that while his words may have seemed harsh, he doesn’t actually believe everything that he says when he takes the stage.

“I’ll often take a complete opposite stance to what I actually believe if it makes the joke better. I’ll pretend to be right-wing, left-wing or no-wing! It depends on the joke,” Gervais explained.

He went on to address Hollywood star Tom Hanks’ viral reaction to a joke he made about actress Felicity Huffman.

“I came here in a limo tonight and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman,” Gervais joked during the show.

“It’s her daughter I feel sorry for. That must be the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to her, and her dad was in ‘Wild Hogs.’”

Gervais said that he does not think Hanks was actually upset.

“I don’t think he was anti what I was saying,” he added. “I think he sort of thought, ‘Oh, this is a bit hot. Is this OK?’”

Gervais recalled that the audience seemed to particularly love a joke he made at the expense of Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and, by the end, his date was too old for him,” the comedian had joked.

“Even Prince Andrew is like, ‘Come on Leo, mate. You’re nearly 50.”

“But the flip side of it, when I teased Leonardo [DiCaprio], and he really laughed, people loved that!” Gervais said.

“People love a celebrity going, ‘You got me.’ That’s all you have to do.”
