When General George Washington took to the field with his men he was not a revolutionary. At least not in the regular sense. Washington was fighting for independence. He and his American cohorts just wanted, as Jefferson had said before the fighting broke out, the naturally due rights of freeborn Englishmen.

That’s why when the Americans won that war of secession against a government of many conservative Whig farmers they replaced it with their own government of conservative Whig farmers. But today’s supposed revolutionaries want something else.

Taking their cue not from Magna Carta, the Declaration of Arbroath, the English Glorious Revolution of 1688, or our own Declaration of Independence, today’s Democrats, Black Lives Matter supporters, Antifa, and the looters, rioters, and arsonists who come in their wake look to the French Revolution (the first true left-wing authoritarian revolution), the Lenin coup de tat, and the Khmer Rouge for their ideological inspiration.

Washington, Jefferson, and Adams do not excite them. Robespierre, Trotsky, and Pol Pot do. The vicious riff-raff in the streets today want to destroy American history because they stand for exactly the opposite of what traditional American monuments and statues commemorate.

The Left also knows that if it can kill democracy here it kills a historically endangered animal. With the exception of the Anglosphere, Europe, and a small amount of global partners like Japan, Israel, Taiwan, Colombia, and India, self-representative government is not the main idea of choice for regimes now, nor has it ever been.

The best the people of most nations can usually look forward to is a Mussolini-like system such as today’s China, where the government lets you have certain options, but free expression is not among them.

First the British, then we, changed all that. Though not perfect and copybook blotted by the original sin of slavery, the United States, by trial, error, bloodshed, and redemption has overcome most of its faults and emerged the strongest and one of the most free societies on Earth. And that outrages the Left.

For even after socialism died in Moscow and Beijing, even after the Warsaw Pact collapsed, even after the Yalta betrayal was redeemed, the dark and putrid fire of authoritarian socialism remained a steady flame in the faculty lounges, newsrooms, and cultural meccas of the victorious and still free United States of America.

Now we see the contemptible flame burning bright in the House of Representatives, in some state governments, and on the streets of America. There Antifa, Black Lives Matter, Democrats, and their likely Chinese sponsors burn, steal, and destroy in the name of concepts completely foreign to the 4th of July.

They do so with reckless abandon because they know at least 40% of the American people have been programmed by generations of educational indoctrination to support them. However, in the hearts and minds of more Americans other ideals hold sway. And those are the dreams of liberty, justice, and honor we mark today. In the fullness of time, and with God’s good grace, they will be triumphant in America.
