On Thursday, conservative and U.S. Army combat veteran Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) said that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts should resign from the bench and run for office if he “believes his political judgment is so exquisite.” This, after Justice Roberts joined with the court’s liberal wing on two key decisions on LGBTQ issues and on DACA this week.

“John Roberts again postures as a Solomon who will save our institutions from political controversy and accountability,” said Cotton. “If the Chief Justice believes his political judgment is so exquisite, I invite him to resign, travel to Iowa, and get elected. I suspect voters will find his strange views no more compelling than do the principled justices on the Court.”

President Donald Trump also slammed Roberts and recent court decisions: “The recent Supreme Court decisions, not only on DACA, Sanctuary Cities, Census, and others, tell you only one thing, we need NEW JUSTICES of the Supreme Court. If the Radical Left Democrats assume power, your Second Amendment, Right to Life, Secure Borders, and…Religious Liberty, among many other things, are OVER and GONE!” he tweeted. He then promised a new list of nominees for the high court.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), a legal scholar himself, vehemently went after Roberts: “Judging is not a game. It’s not supposed to be a game but sadly over recent years more and more, Chief Justice Roberts has been playing games with the court to achieve the policy outcomes he desires. Five justices today held that it was illegal for the Trump administration to stop breaking the law. That’s bizarre.”

Department of Homeland Security Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli said, “If Justice Roberts played football, he’d be an all-star punter!”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) also commented on the matter: “By ruling that President Trump cannot terminate DACA in the same manner that President Obama used to start it, the Court’s decision creates two standards of executive power: one for President Obama and another for President Trump. Today’s decision binds the Trump Administration to the politically-expedient policy decisions of President Obama, and hampers efforts to meaningfully restore sanity to our immigration system.”

The president tweeted his next move: “As President of the United States, I am asking for a legal solution on DACA, not a political one, consistent with the rule of law. The Supreme Court is not willing to give us one, so now we have to start this process all over again.”

The president had previously offered a DACA compromise to the Democrats if they would negotiate with him on other issues. They turned him down and have reacted joyously to these Supreme Court decisions. President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said that nominating liberal Earl Warren, of the “Warren Report” on the JFK killing, to the Supreme Court was the worst decision he ever made. Republicans may eventually feel that way about John Roberts.
