Minneapolis cop involved in Floyd’s death to have murder charge upgraded: three other officers to be charged as well

New reports are coming in that indicate the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office is about to announce that Derek Chauvin, the officer who was already arrested for his role in the death of George Floyd, is about to have his murder charge upgraded to second-degree murder. In addition, the three other officers involved in Floyd’s passing are set to be charged as well.

Former Officers Thomas Lane, J.A. Kueng and Tou Thao are all set to be charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder, according to Fox News.

Floyd died on Memorial Day while in the custody of these four officers, all of whom were fired the day after his death when video emerged of Chauvin pinning him by the neck while he frantically said that he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin was then arrested last Friday for third degree murder, a charge that will reportedly be upgraded today.

Ben Crump, an attorney representing the Floyd family, held a press conference earlier in the day on Wednesday at the exact spot where Floyd was pinned down. There, he called for the other three ex-officers to be charged in his death as well.

“We expect all of the police officers to be arrested before we have the memorial here in Minneapolis tomorrow. Because we cannot have two justice systems in America – one for black America, one for white America. We must have equal justice for the United States of America,” Crump said.

“Change is going to come in the criminal justice system. I proclaim, with his son as my witness, that change starts today,” Crump added. “We are confident attorney general Keith Ellison is working feverishly to do the right thing to make sure George Floyd’s family achieves justice, holding the officers accountable to the full extent of the law — each and every one of them.”

Ellison is expected to make the announcement about the new charges at some point this afternoon. We will update you further as this story develops.
