The cast of the iconic 1986 movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” just reunited to share their memories of what it was like to make the film.

Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Grey, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, as well as other cast members participated in a virtual reunion for Josh Gad’s YouTube series “Reunited Apart.” Broderick was the first person to appear on the Zoom call, and he remembers the moment his agent told him that John Hughes wanted him for the movie. “I was doing a play at the time and everybody said he’s the Steven Spielberg of teen movies, that’s what they said,” recalled Broderick, 58. “I said, ‘That seems good’ and then I think I rented ‘Breakfast Club’ and ‘Sixteen Candles’ and I loved them.”

“I got a call to the stage door: ‘Matthew, you have a call.’ It was Ace Video Store [saying]: ‘You’ve had ‘Sixteen Candles out for two and a half months now. How do you intend to pay? You owe $11,000,'” he added. “And I said ‘You can’t charge me more than the tape cost, what do you mean?’ They were quite serious.”

Grey, who played Broderick’s sister in the film, later appeared on the call as well, talking about some of the antics that happened on-set. “I had no one to hang out with because they were all playing all the time, so I was very much on my own,” said Grey, 60. “So I would get in all sorts of trouble.”

She added that she loved playing pranks on the set, revealing that she once disguised herself as a crazed fan trying to sneak into filming. “John [Hughes] had security trailing me and saying, ‘Keep her away from us,’ and I just was going up to everyone to see if I could get into the movie as this autograph hound,” she recalled of her antics. “I felt so left out!”

“I totally forgot, you were such a nut!” said Sara, 53, as she laughed at the memory.

The cast had nothing but kind words for Hughes, who tragically died of a heart attack at the age of 59 in 2009. “He treated kids like they have problems, they have worries and he honored all of that,” said Ruck, 63, with Grey adding, “It was almost like he was giving teenagers a break.” The reunion ended with other famous stars like Molly Ringwald, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Steve Martin paying tribute to Hughes as well.
