CNN has just been given a major award in journalism for the network’s controversial 2019 filming of the FBI raid and arrest of Roger Stone, a close friend and longtime associate of President Donald Trump.

White House Correspondents’ Association announced that the award for journalism was given to CNN on Tuesday.

“CNN’s reporting on the Roger Stone arrest began a month earlier, with a clue about a court scheduling anomaly. Then came unusual grand jury activity. Then an odd, packed suitcase wheeled by one of the prosecutors in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Stone,” the WHCA judges said of CNN‘s report. “It culminated early in the morning of Jan. 25, 2019, when a CNN producer and a photojournalist, staked outside of Stone’s home in Ft. Lauderdale, captured the 5 a.m., no-knock raid by the FBI of the former confidant of President Donald Trump.”

Many social media users, however, have disagreed that CNN deserved any kind of journalistic award for their reporting on this, as rumors have long swirled that the network was tipped off about Stone’s arrest by someone working in the government who wanted to hurt the president. President Trump led the charge on pushing this theory when the report came out in January of 2019. “Greatest Witch Hunt in the History of our Country! NO COLLUSION! Border Coyotes, Drug Dealers and Human Traffickers are treated better. Who alerted CNN to be there?” Trump tweeted.

A CNN reporter denied that the network was tipped off, instead claiming that it was a reporter’s “instinct” based on “unusual grand jury activity in Washington, D.C.” that led reporters to go to Stone’s home when he was being arrested. Many, however, have never bought this, including Stone. “Not only was CNN tipped off in advance of my arrest, allowed to video it from 25 feet away while the street was cleared, clearly had a draft copy of my indictment while it was still sealed, but now both Jake Tapper and David Gergen have salivated over the prospect that I could be raped in prison,” he told The Daily Caller. “These people are demons.” Social media has widely panned the WHCA for giving this award to CNN:

It’s truly sad to see just how much journalistic integrity has gone down the tubes in recent years.
