Prince Harry has reportedly sold his beloved handmade hunting rifles in an attempt to please his wife Meghan Markle after she forced him to give up the sport.

The U.K. Sun reported that the pair of prized Purdey firearms were reportedly bought by a fellow hunter for around $61,000 in a private deal. Harry learned to shoot when he was just a little boy and he had been an avid hunter for years, even once killing a one-ton buffalo. Meghan, however, is vehemently opposed to hunting and it is believed that she made Harry give up the practice.

Harry, 35, sold his two British-made guns five months ago, before leaving the United Kingdom to move to Los Angeles, California with his 38-year-old American wife and their son.

“He bought them because he wanted them, not because they belonged to Harry, but he was quite chuffed when he found out,” a friend of the anonymous buyer said. “They are beautiful examples and he’s very pleased with them but he’s not the sort of person who wants to boast about the royal connection.”

This comes one week after renowned conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall said that she expected Harry to turn his back on all bloodsports, adding that she has accepted him and his brother Prince William as champions of the natural world. “Except they hunt and shoot. But I think Harry will stop because Meghan doesn’t like hunting,” Goodall said.

Harry is president of African Parks, a South African organization, and is also a patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana. He is known to have shot dead a water buffalo in Argentina back in 2004, and he was seen hunting wild boar with William in Spain in 2014.

While engaged to Meghan in 2017, Harry travelled with friends to Germany, where they killed fifteen wild boar. It was thought at the time that Meghan was not pleased by this, as she was already known to be an avid animal lover.

In 2018, it was reported that Meghan had asked Harry not to hunt with his family on Boxing Day. However, a source told Daily Mail that Harry went “out as usual for the shoot after a hearty breakfast” and that “it’s completely untrue that Her Royal Highness has banned the Duke from shooting.”
