A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Joe Biden’s lead evaporating over President Donald Trump rather quickly, going from six points a week ago to a statistical tie.

Worse news for Democrats, the two main areas they’d like to focus on regarding Trump’s supposed weaknesses —the economy and his response to the coronavirus pandemic— show Americans actually prefer him.

Reuters reports that “45% of Americans said Trump was better suited to create jobs, while 32% said Biden was the better candidate for that.” It is a crucial element in deciding who should lead the country come November. “Thirty-seven percent said Trump was better leading the country’s coronavirus response, while 35% preferred Biden,” they add.

Trending Downward

This latest poll does still show Biden leading Trump overall, but by an amount within the margin of error. The two-point lead in the very same poll is down from six points one week ago, and eight points from mid-April. While Biden’s numbers are trending downward, Trump’s are getting better.

Earlier this month, a Gallup survey conducted in the second half of April showed the president’s overall approval rating had bounced back to nearly 50 percent after taking a hit earlier that month. Independent voters were being credited for the improvement.

Rebuild

Such strong numbers on the creation of jobs show Americans are buying into the president’s promise to rebuild the economy into a massive job-producing engine a second time. Trump told Fox News host Jeanine Pirro that he was determined to rebuild the economy in honor of those who died as a result of the pandemic. “We’re going to rebuild it again in honor of all those who perished today,” he vowed. The president recently admitted that he does “not sleep at night thinking about it” those who have died during the coronavirus crisis.

President Trump predicted a surge once the economy is finally unleashed in accordance with his multi-phase plan. “I think the stimulus, coupled with this pent-up demand and everybody wanting to get out and go back to work,” the president said, continuing with, “I think we’re going to have a just a tremendous surge.” That’s a surge America will never see under a Biden administration.
