New Orleans Police recruit whose dad died of COVID-19 graduates with his father’s badge number

It's safe to say that his father would be very proud!

A New Orleans Police recruit is honoring his father, who tragically died of COVID-19, in a truly beautiful way, as he just graduated from the police academy with his father’s badge number.

Fox News reported that Mark Hall Jr. lost his dad, veteran NOPD Officer Mark Hall Sr., just one day before he was set to graduate on Wednesday. The elder officer had been on the police force for thirty years before he passed away on April 30 after contracting coronavirus.

Hall Jr. had been scheduled to graduate with his class the next day on May 1, but his final exam was put on hold because of the tragic loss of his dad. Though he was not able to graduate with his class, he was given a ceremony of his own on Wednesday that was “held privately and in line with COVID-19 restrictions.”

A post by the New Orleans Police Department praised Hall Jr. for taking and passing his final exam, “undeterred by the tragic loss.”

“Today, Superintendent Shaun Ferguson administered the oath of office to Hall Jr., who received something even more special – his father’s badge,” the department stated. “Hall Jr.’s mother pinned her husband’s badge, #1786, on her son’s chest to continue the family legacy of service to the citizens and visitors of New Orleans.”
