Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has just introduced a new piece of legislation targeting Hollywood after accusing the entertainment world of being “complicit in China’s censorship and propaganda in the name of bigger profits.”

Cruz’s new bill would stop the Pentagon from teaming up with Hollywood studios to help them censor films to appease the demands of communist China. Known as “The Stopping Censorship, Restoring Integrity, Protecting Talkies Act” (SCRIPT Act), the bill specifically bans the Department of Defense from coordinating with film studios to please the Chinese Communist Party.

“The SCRIPT Act will serve as a wake-up call by forcing Hollywood studios to choose between the assistance they need from the American government and the dollars they want from China,” Cruz explained.

Though it has not been highly publicized, the DOD and Hollywood have been working together for a hundred years, as the Pentagon often provides Hollywood with access to military facilities and equipment. The U.K. Independent reported that the DOD has had a hand in over 800 movies since 1917, including such blockbusters as  Iron Man and The Terminator.

Cruz’s bill comes as various Washington lawmakers are trying to cut American ties with China in the wake of the communist nation unleashing the coronavirus upon the globe, killing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Hollywood’s cozy relationship with China goes back a long way as well, as film studios make lots of money off releasing blockbusters in particular in China. That’s why they are willing to censor their movies to meet communist China’s demands, just so they can make more money.

Examples of Hollywood censoring movies to appease China include editing the film adaptation of the book World War Z to make it so that the zombie outbreak did not begin in China. Perhaps the most egregious example of censorship for China came with the 2012 remake of Red Dawn, when producers digitally removed each and every reference to the Chinese as the villains, replacing them with North Koreans.

Liberals will undoubtedly decry Cruz’s bill as “racist” because Democrats have effectively gotten in bed with the Chinese, but we fully support this legislation. It’s time to cut China off once and for all, and to no longer appease the communist state in any way.
