On Tuesday, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) announced he has recovered from coronavirus after testing negative for COVID-19. Senator Paul was diagnosed with the illness last month and placed himself in self-quarantine.

Paul tweeted, “I appreciate all the best wishes I have received. I have been retested and I am negative. I have started volunteering at a local hospital to assist those in my community who are in need of medical help, including Coronavirus patients,” Paul added. “Together we will overcome this!”

Paul, who is also a medical doctor, was the first member of the Senate to be diagnosed with coronavirus. Paul tested positive for COVID-19 last month, after attending various meetings and lunches on Capitol Hill to work on the coronavirus stimulus package.

Paul tweeted on March 22, “Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for COVID-19. He is feeling fine and is in quarantine. He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events. He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.”

A follow-up tweet from Paul added, “He expects to be back in the Senate after his quarantine period ends and will continue to work for the people of Kentucky at this difficult time. Ten days ago, our D.C. office began operating remotely, hence virtually no staff has had contact with Senator Rand Paul.”

Once he discovered he was positive, Paul immediately self-quarantined in Kentucky, where he worked from home.

After Paul was diagnosed in March, a number of Republican senators also went into self-quarantine, including Senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee, both of whom had interacted with Paul. Both Romney and Paul did not experience symptoms and both are now out of self-quarantine.

Donald Trump Jr. tweeted after Paul’s recovery was announced Tuesday, referencing the senator’s 2017 assault by his neighbor and the incident in which a man opened fire on Republicans practicing baseball, “A great man and an example to follow. He’s had one hell of a rough year or so (almost murdered twice by the tolerant left) and surviving Coronavirus… and he still steps up to help his constituency and all Americans in need!!! Thank you @RandPaul.”
