A royal expert has just revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will likely struggle to pay for their security due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Daily Mail reported that Harry and Meghan have moved to Los Angeles, California after stepping down as senior members of the British royal family, and they will now have to foot the bill for their multi-million dollar security tab themselves. Royal expert Omid Scobie pointed out that the couple currently has no source of regular income, which could leave them in hot water when it comes to funding their security.

“They have spent the last few years not earning a living. As a royal, your expenses are covered but you don’t earn a salary. It will be very tough for them especially in the few months ahead,” Scobie explained. “No-one knows when there is an end date to this. This could follow us for some time.

“For Harry and Meghan, on top of the difficulties they have had with the press, there has been this underlying issue of who pays for security moving forward. It is something the couple were very conscious of—that from March 31st it would have to be done by themselves. They didn’t want to leave themselves open to further attacks”

Laney Lui, a royal commentator for CTV, agreed that Harry and Meghan are in for some tough times. “Security is not cheap. For them, you are dealing with multiple personnel and round-the-clock at that. You have to also account for that and travel and other expenses,” she said. “This all goes back to the curiosity about their future plans and what they will be. They are going to have to have a pretty significant income to cover that and their lifestyle.”

This comes after President Donald Trump revealed that he will not have American taxpayers pay for the security for the couple, forcing them to pay for it themselves. “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada,” Trump tweeted last month. “Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”

Harry and Meghan responded to Trump by claiming that they had never intended to have the U.S. government fund their security, but royal sources have claimed that this actually is what they had intended all along.
