Democrat Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer rolled out the big guns Wednesday to defend her overbearing and overbroad statewide lockdown. Governor Whitmer has said time and again that social distancing is the only way we will overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and if people fail or refuse to follow the guidelines people will die.
Whitmer used similar language when she issued her first Stay Home order on March 23rd, when she issued a dire warning that seven million Michigan residents were likely to get sick and that one million would need to be hospitalized. That turned out to be dramatically wrong. In fact, it is so far off its hard to even calculate how much they missed the mark.
Since then, the governor issued another far more harsh order blocking people from buying paint, plants or even going to second homes they own in the state. People aren’t even allowed to cross the street to see family or friends.
We are told by Governor Whitmer it’s all based on the science and the models that say if we stop social distancing we will have a massive surge of new cases.
However, during a press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Marisa Eisenberg, an epidemiologist from the University of Michigan, said something completely at odds with those recurring comments. In trying to demonstrate removing restrictions on Michigan residents, Eisenberg actually admitted that her team has no idea what would happen. “If social distancing is lifted completely there are a wide range of outcomes from a very small or even no resurgence all the way up to quite a large second peak or resurgence in transmission,” is what Dr. Eisenberg explained during the afternoon televised event.
Eisenberg went further and again admitted that her team cannot even guess where on the model we would end up if all social distancing were ended on May 1st; she said a second peak “is a real possibility that we need to consider.”
Well, “no resurgence,” as Dr. Eisenberg explained, is also a real possibility we need to consider. Why are we only considering the very worst case scenarios when making these decisions?
Make no mistake: a worse case, black swan event is already taking place because of reckless inaccurate public health models that were put out over the past several weeks. Tens of millions of Americans have lost their jobs and more will be added this week. Homes are being lost, marriages destroyed and companies put out of business.
I don’t think it’s too much to ask to have some actual facts to make such monumental generational decisions. We have committed financial suicide in America based on SWAG and SWAG alone.
