Country music Dolly Parton just stepped up to do her part in helping to fight coronavirus in a big way by donating $1 million of her own money to efforts to find a vaccine for COVID-19.

Parton took to Instagram on Wednesday to reveal that she is making a $1 million to Vanderbilt University after being told by an old friend that researchers there are making progress in finding a cure for coronavirus.

“My longtime friend Dr. Naji Abumrad, who’s been involved in research at Vanderbilt for many years, informed me that they were making some exciting advancements towards that research of the coronavirus for a cure,” she wrote. “I am making a donation of $1 million to Vanderbilt towards that research and to encourage people that can afford it to make donations.”

Parton ended her post by writing “keep the faith,” something that she has been urging her fans to do since the start of this pandemic, which she described a few days ago as a lesson from God.

The Vanderbilt University Medical Center  states that Dr. Abumrad is a professor of surgery at the Tennessee school and that he has written 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has written several book chapters. He did not respond to requests for comments from the media, and Parton did not elaborate any further on what specifically has gotten her so excited about a potential cure being found.

Social media users have been praising Parton for her generosity in the hours since she announced her donation.

“Dolly, America’s Mother Teresa. May God continue to bless all that you do,” one social media user commented, with another adding, “Dolly is going to save us all. Can’t say I’m surprised.”

Parton’s line about keeping the faith echoes a statement she made a few days ago about coronavirus, when she said God is trying to teach us something.

“I think he’s trying to hold us up to the light so we can see ourselves and see each other through the eyes of love, and I hope we learn that lesson. I think that when this passes we’re all gonna be better people,” she said in a video posted to her social media accounts.

“So just keep the faith, don’t be too scared,” the 74 year-old concluded. “It’s going to be alright. God loves us.”
