On Friday, Fox News pundit and former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino suggested that a “2nd task force” should be created to focus on reopening the U.S. economy.

President Donald Trump seems to be a fan of the idea. “I think we need a 2nd task force assembled at direction of POTUS to look ahead to reopening of the economy,” Perino tweeted. “Made up of a nonpartisan/bipartisan mix of experts across industry sectors, so that we have their recommendations & plan – let 1st taskforce focus on crisis at the moment.”

On Saturday, Trump retweeted Perino’s post, adding, “Good idea Dana!”

While battling the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has been the top priority for the current task force, President Trump and many others worry that the ongoing shutdowns could lead to economic suffering that could even be worse than anything the virus causes.

On Friday Night, Fox News host Tucker Carlson questioned the wisdom of allowing leaders and experts who are well-meaning, like Dr. Anthony Fauci, but still only focused on just the coronavirus to make decisions that could create a different kind of suffering for millions.

Carlson said millions “out of work and staring at poverty” is a “far bigger disaster than the virus itself, by any measure,” adding, “Tony Fauci, decent as he may be, can’t see that, because he doesn’t think it’s his job to see it.”

“But even a doctor should be able to think beyond the models,” the Fox News host continued. “Our response to coronavirus could turn this into a far poorer nation. Poor countries are unhealthy countries, always and everywhere. In poor countries, people die of treatable diseases. In poor countries, people are far more vulnerable to obscure viruses, like the one we are fighting now.”

Carlson makes many good points. It would not be smart to create an even worse problem in the name of fighting COVID-19. Hopefully we see some movement of putting this team together from the White House sooner than later.
