In a new rant on Friday, comedian Bill Maher just went off on politically correct people who have been crying “racism” over the use of terms like “Wuhan coronavirus” or “Chinese coronavirus.”
“Can’t we even have a pandemic without getting offended?” Maher said. He went on to point out that scientists have been naming pandemics like Ebola, Zika, West Nile and MERS after their origins for decades.
Maher then mocked Democratic California Rep. Ted Lieu for a tweet he posted last month in which he claimed that calling coronavirus the Wuhan or Chinese virus was no less ridiculous than calling it the Milan Virus.
Dear @DrPaulGosar: I will pray for you, your staff & the person hospitalized.
Also, calling #COVIDー19 the Wuhan Virus is an example of the myopia that allowed it to spread in the US. The virus is not constrained by country or race. Be just as stupid to call it the Milan Virus. https://t.co/of91p65mIO

“No, that would be way stupider because the virus didn’t come from Milan,” Maher fired back. “And if it did, I guarantee we’d be calling it the Milan Virus. Can’t we even have a pandemic without getting offended? When they named Lyme disease after a town in Connecticut, the locals didn’t get all ticked off.”
Maher added that it was truly scary to him that people “would rather die from the virus than call it by the wrong name.”
“It’s not racist to point out that eating bats is batshit crazy,” he said. “In 2007, researchers at the University of Hong Kong wrote, ‘The presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb.’”
Maher ended his rant with a message to those who worry people will hear the phrase the “Chinese virus” and blame China. “The answer is we should blame China. Not Chinese Americans,” he said. “But we can’t stop telling the truth because racists get the wrong idea… We can’t afford the luxury anymore of non-judginess toward a country with habits that kill millions of people.”
Maher really hits the nail on the head here. Now is not the time for political correctness, and it’s ridiculous that liberals are once again trying to make this pandemic all about race. The reality is that this pandemic is China’s fault, and they need to pay for what they have done to the world. We can’t afford to let race-baiters make us forget who is really responsible for what is happening.
