Yesterday, we reported that Mayor Bill de Blasio had accused President Donald Trump of betraying his hometown of New York City with his response to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, Trump is firing back to shut de Blasio down in front of everyone.

“I’m not dealing with him; I’m dealing with the governor,” Trump said of de Blasio at the White House press conference yesterday afternoon.

Though Trump and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo come from different sides of the political spectrum, they have come together to try and work through this crisis.

“The governor agrees with me, and I agree with him,” Trump added, according to Breitbart News. “So far, we’ve been very much in sync.” This came a day after de Blasio claimed Trump has failed New York City.

“The fate of New York City rests in the hands of one man,” de Blasio said. “He is a New Yorker. And right now, he is betraying the city he comes from.”

During his White House press conference, Trump pointed out that de Blasio and Cuomo have clashed with one another about the city’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic despite the fact that they are both Democrats. “I guess they’re not agreeing with each other necessarily,” Trump said.

Earlier this week, de Blasio urged New Yorkers to prepare for a shelter-in-place order, but Cuomo later shut down these “rumors.”

“It cannot happen legally. No city in the state can quarantine itself without state approval and I have no interest whatsoever and no plan whatsoever to quarantine any city,” Cuomo said, according to the New York Post. “There’s not going to be any quarantine,” he later added. “There’s not going to be any, ‘You must stay in your house,’ rule.”

Though Cuomo has been a frequent critic of the Trump presidency, he has praised the Trump administration’s response to the virus, saying on Wednesday that “we’re fighting the same war…we’re in the same trench.”

“He is fully engaged on trying to help… He’s being very creative & very energetic and I thank him for his partnership,” Cuomo said of Trump.

Now is the time to put political divisions aside so that we can come together and fight this virus. We applaud Governor Cuomo for being able to do this; perhaps Mayor de Blasio should consider doing the same thing.
