Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is still in hot water for threatening comments he made about two conservative Supreme Court justices, and he may yet face consequences from his fellow members of Congress.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) continues to call for Schumer to be censored for threatening Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh last week at an abortion rally. Hawley has introduced a resolution to the Senate, calling for Schumer to be censured, and over a dozen Republican congressmen signed a letter of support for this on Monday.

Hawley’s resolution described Schumer’s comments as “an attempt to unduly influence the judicial decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States and to undermine the vision of the founders of the United States of the ‘complete independence of the courts of justice,” according to Fox News.

“Of course Schumer’s attacks were ‘inappropriate’ and ‘wrong’! He should be CENSURED,” Hawley tweeted Friday. He posted this alongside a video in which CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin stated that Schumer’s remarks sounded “like a physical threat.”

Schumer made the comments during a rally hosted by the Center for Reproductive Rights outside the Supreme Court building as the justices heard arguments in a case dealing with the restrictions over who can perform abortions in Louisiana.

“I want to tell you, Gorsuch. I want to tell you, Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price!” Schumer said. “You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

Chief Justice John Roberts fired back with a rare rebuke, calling Schumer’s comments “inappropriate” and “dangerous.” Harvard Law School Professor Laurence Tribe, a liberal, agreed with Roberts, arguing that what Schumer said was “inexcusable.”

Hawley has pointed out that threatening Republicans is becoming a growing trend among Democrats.

“Schumer’s threats to Gorsuch & Kavanaugh is part of pattern of Democrat attacks on the #SupremeCourt,” Hawley said. “Dems have threatened to pack it; now they’re threatening Justices personally. This is insane. It’s wrong. Schumer should be censured.”

Schumer has denied that he was threatening the justices, saying that he was just “passionate” and “angry” about the threat to women’s rights to an abortion. He refused to apologize to Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, however, instead only saying that he “should not have used the words I used,” and that “they didn’t come out the way I intended to.”

Hawley is not buying it, however, and he’s moving forward with calls for the censure. If he is successful, Schumer would be just the ninth U.S. senator to be censured, with the most recent example of this being in 1990, when Sen. David Durenberger (R-MN) was censured for various financial misconduct allegations.

What Schumer said really was a threat to two Supreme Court justices, and this kind of behavior can’t be tolerated. It’s time for Congress to put a stop to this violent rhetoric once and for all by approving Hawley’s resolution and censoring Schumer.
