There are several very good definitions of gall.

An uninvited ex-spouse showing up to a wedding. A leftist flying to a climate conference in a private jet. But perhaps the biggest one to come to mind is of a U.S. senator who voted to convict an innocent president of abuse of power, but refuses to look at the blatant corruption at the core of the party he sided with during the trial of that president.

Which is exactly what GOP Senator Mitt Romney of Utah is thinking of doing in regards to the Senate Judiciary Committee probe into the corruption of the Biden family in Ukraine.

Romney said this to The Washington Post on Thursday: “I would prefer that investigations are done by an independent, non-political body. There’s no question the appearance is not good… There’s no question but that the appearance of looking into Burisma and Hunter Biden appears political. And I think people are tired of these kinds of political investigations.”

The nerve of the man is astounding. He did not ask for a non-political body when the president was under attack in Congress. Then it was fine to let the Democrats have their way on almost every question.

But now that the other side is up for investigation, actually the son of the presumptive Democrat nominee and by extension the nominee himself, the Congress is not good enough. Romney wants a whitewash so he can go on attacking the president and so his media allies can ignore the corruption of the Bidens.

Fox News reports, “Romney’s vote is pivotal. Republicans maintain an 8-to-6 majority in the committee, and if Romney sides with Democrats the result would be a 7-7 tie.”

If Romney votes to kill the probe, as he is signaling, that would mean the measure would not pass, a tie kills it, and the Bidens get off scot-free in the Senate.

The GOP was quick to respond.

“Joe Biden has never adequately answered these questions,” GOP Sen. Ron Johnson said on Fox News this week.

If Mitt Romney gets his way, Biden may never have to.
