Fox News reported Tuesday that the CEO of a major grocery store chain that serves New York state, New Jersey and Connecticut sees a return to fully stocked shelves very soon.
Stew Leonard, Jr. has spent his life in the family business. Over the years Stew Leonard’s groceries have seen snowstorms and hurricanes. But nothing like this.
Nevertheless, things are getting better day by day, “We’ve seen all the empty shelves that other places have had and a tough time getting supplied. There was just a huge spike like that that came up. and, right now things have settled down,” he said.

“I’m down in our store right now. It’s a Tuesday morning. Things look normal in our stores now. Our customers today are looking for social spacing. They don’t want to stay near each other. They want to stay at least six feet away. We’ve actually even put some Plexiglas up on the registers now so you aren’t directly in contact with the cashier.”
He continued, speaking about specific inventory items.
“Bagels, we always had big loose bins of them. But, we now have put a person in front of that and you order your bagel. So it’s service bagels now. And also, we’ve always been known at Stew Leonard’s to have a lot of sampling and unfortunately there [are] no samples going on now because we’ve discontinued them during this crisis that we’re having.”

He concluded, “…We went from, like for instance, selling 10,000 cans of tuna fish a week. All of a sudden it went up to selling 40,000 cans of tuna fish a week. I mean you can’t quickly adjust that fast.”
Retail groceries in the DC area are saying the same things. As people have purchased great amounts of food and other merchandise over the last 2-3 weeks, they have only so much room at home to store their purchases. When they run out of room they will stop bulk buying. That will give groceries the break in the action they need to completely restock their shelves.
So if you can’t get a certain item or items right now don’t worry, according to those in the business it should be available relatively soon at your local grocery.
