Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) plans to create a new “Squad” of progressive lawmakers took a major hit on Super Tuesday when her candidates of choice had a day that was anything but super.

Texas congressional candidate Jessica Cisneros, who was backed by Ocasio-Cortez, failed in her attempt to unseat nine-term incumbent Henry Cuellar, the Democrat representing the Texas 28th district south of San Antonio. Cisneros took a page out of Ocasio-Cortez’s playbook by shaming Cuellar for being a moderate liberal, describing him as “Trump’s favorite Democrat.”

Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter today to try and spin Cisneros’ loss in a positive way for her movement.

“I am so incredibly proud of Jessica Cisneros. At 26 years old, she ran for office for the first time to offer TX28 new leadership that fights for workers, gender rights,& a climate agenda,” the congresswoman wrote. “She stood up to Koch brother money & incumbency, & she came closer than anyone imagined.”

Christina Tzintzún Ramirez, another progressive candidate running for a Democrat Senate seat, is currently fighting to get to a runoff with MJ Hegar, the Democratic establishment’s favorite to replace longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn. Ramirez is currently in a tight battle with Texas State Sen. Royce West to make it to the runoff with Hegar, according to Fox News.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that “my heart is also full at the candidacy of @cristinafortx whose race is currently too close to call in the runoff for TX Senate.

“These women come from backgrounds that typically make running for office inaccessible,” she added. “They are holding their own & building progressive power.”

Georgette Gomez, who was also endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, was able to make it to the general election for California’s 53rd district in San Diego County. However, she finished in second with 19 percent of the vote against Democratic establishment candidate Sara Jacobs, who garnered 28 percent. Though Gomez has qualified for the general election, her chances of winning are slim.

Each of these candidates were endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez’s PAC Courage to Change, which aims to help progressive candidates take on the Democratic establishment, much to the dismay of top Democrats in the party.

While Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most famous Democrats in Congress, she has also become a major thorn in the side of members of the establishment-wing of her party. They are undoubtedly celebrating right now, along with Republicans, knowing that Ocasio-Cortez’s attempt to start a new “Squad” seems to be dead in the water.
