There are states that have open primaries. That means regardless of the party you’re registered with you can vote in any party primary. South Carolina is one of those states and it has a primary coming up.

For some time state Democrats have been using the open primary to cross over and vote in the GOP primary for the candidate they think will do the most damage inside the GOP or would be weakest against a Dem opponent. They have been generally unsuccessful, but have caused some headaches.

Tired of Dem meddling, the GOP in SC is fighting back.

A group called Trump229 (2/29 being the primary date) has the goal of getting Dems to support going to an exclusive party primary and also supporting the president. How will they do that? They will give the Dems a taste of their own medicine and are encouraging GOP voters to vote for…Sanders.

The Dems could also vote for Weld and give the president a slight annoyance.

Closing the open primary would benefit both sides, as a truer picture of the party strength of a candidate would emerge form the primary results. But Dems like their ability to throw wrenches.

Stacy Shea, Karen Martin, and Ron Tamaccio are heading up the SC project. LifeZette talked to Shea, “For years now South Carolina Republicans have been trying to close our primaries. Democrats have a long history of meddling in our primary contests, gleefully casting votes for the candidate whom they feel is the weakest overall choice among our candidates.”

She continued.

“Now the tables are turned and South Carolina Democrats don’t much care for it. One lawmaker, the Democrat Senator Marlon Kimpson even taking the floor of the SC Senate to say how wrong this practice is and to try to stop it with legislation that would keep us out of their Presidential Preference Primary but would sunset in 2024, allowing them to meddle in ours just in the nick of time. Hypocrisy much?”

Shea has a point. The Dem attitude is, “What’s mine is mine. What’s yours is negotiable.”

It’s about time the GOP called them at it.
