A Somali community leader from Minnesota has confirmed that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) told her friends years ago that she did indeed marry her own brother.

Abdihakim Osman just opened up to Daily Mail about how Omar desperately wanted to get her brother Ahmed Elmi the necessary papers so that he could stay in the United States. At the time, Omar was married to her first husband Ahmed Hirsi, but she soon hatched a plan to ensure her brother could stay in America; that scandalized the Somali community in Minneapolis.

“No one knew there had been a wedding until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later,” Osman explained.

Omar has vehemently denied rumors that she married her own brother, calling the allegations “baseless, absurd rumors,” but she has stayed noticeably quiet about the situation in recent months.

Omar married her first husband Hirsi in 2002 in a Muslim ceremony that was not legally recognized in the U.S. They went on to have two children before Elmi turned up in Minneapolis in the later 2000s, according to Osman, who called Hirsi his nickname of “Southside” during the exclusive interview.

“People began noticing that Ilhan and Southside (Hirsi) were often with a very effeminate young guy,” Osman said. “He was very feminine in the way he dressed — he would wear light lipstick and pink clothes and very, very, short shorts in the summer. People started whispering about him.”

“[Hirsi] and Ilhan both told me it was Ilhan’s brother and he had been living in London but he was mixing with what were seen as bad influences that the family did not like,” he continued. “So they sent him to Minneapolis as ‘rehab.'”

Osman added that Omar kept her marriage to Elmi quiet, not inviting anyone from the Somali community to the wedding.

“When [Hirsi] and Ilhan got married, a lot of people were invited. It was a big Islamic wedding uniting two large clans in the Minneapolis community. I would say there were 100-150 people there,” he said. “When she married Elmi, no one even knew about it.”

It has long been rumored that Omar and Elmi are siblings, but since there is a lack of paper records in their birth country of Somalia, this has not been confirmed. Omar and Elmi married in 2009, one year after she claims to have separated from Hirsi. Osman said that even after this marriage, however, Omar and Hirsi remained together as husband and wife.

“She said she needed to get papers for her brother to go to school. We all thought she was just getting papers together to allow him to stay in this country,” he said. “Once she had the papers they could apply for student loans. They both moved to North Dakota to go to school but she was still married to [Hirsi]. In the Somali way, the only marriage that mattered was the one in the mosque. Ilhan came back to Minneapolis all the time to see her family, but her brother didn’t come with her.”

Omar and Elmi later divorced in 2017 and she remarried Hirsi, with whom she had a third child during her second marriage. She divorced him in November after it was revealed that she was having an affair with her married aide Tim Mynett.

Since Omar is running for reelection this year, Osman’s claims are the last thing she wants coming to light right now. Should these allegations be true, we hope that more evidence comes to light so that Democrats can see who their beloved “Squad” member really is.
