Yesterday, we reported that disgraced “Empire” star Jussie Smollett had been hit with new charges related to him allegedly lying about being the victim of a hate crime in Chicago last year.

Now, Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx, who astonishingly let Smollett off the hook by inexplicably dropping all charges against him, has broken her silence about the new charges, and she has a surprising scapegoat for what has gone down.

On Tuesday evening, Special Prosecutor Dan Webb released a statement in which he announced his office was charging Smollett with six “low-level felonies” after his investigators took another look at the evidence and found that the actor did indeed lie about being the victim of a hate crime in January of 2019, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Smollett had claimed at the time that he was jumped by two men who hurled racial and homophobic slurs at him, but investigators later concluded that he paid them to do so in order to increase his own celebrity and boost his salary on “Empire.”

In his statement, Webb accused Foxx’s office of giving Smollett special treatment in his case, explaining that they gave him a cushy key deal despite the wealth of evidence against him. This deal allowed for Smollett to have all charges against him dropped in exchange for sixteen hours of community service and $10,000, which he had already paid in bond. The Sun Times reported:

“In his letter, Webb said his investigators said the state’s attorney’s office was unable to show ‘documentary evidence’ that Smollett’s case was handled like similar low-level felony cases involving non-celebrity defendants, despite public statements from the office that the case was typical. Webb found that the case against Smollett was strong, and that the state’s attorney’s office provided no documentation that the evidence against Smollett had somehow eroded between his arrest and when the charges were dropped.”

Foxx has since fired back by accusing Webb of using “James Comey-like” tactics, and claiming that the new indictment is a politically-motivated attack on her.

“The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office charged Jussie Smollett with multiple counts, and today the Special Prosecutor did the same,” Foxx said through a spokeswoman. “What’s questionable here is the James Comey-like timing of that charging decision, just 35 days before an election, which can only be interpreted as the further politicization of the justice system, something voters in the era of Donald Trump should consider offensive.”

Foxx is referring to Comey’s decision to reopen an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information right before the election. Foxx is a proud liberal who has made bashing Trump a cornerstone of her reelection campaign, saying that she would be “standing up” to him on immigration issues, according to The Daily Wire.

After a lengthy investigation, the special prosecutor has come to the same conclusion that most Americans came to last year: Foxx’s office made a grave mistake when they dropped all charges against Smollett. Instead of taking responsibility for that mistake now, Foxx is going the classic modern liberal route of trying to inexplicably pin the blame on President Trump.
