President Donald Trump has just spoken out to defend Queen Elizabeth days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they will be stepping down from their senior status in the royal family.

The couple reportedly blindsided the Queen by announcing the news on Instagram without notifying her first.

“We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the pair wrote on their official Sussex Royal Instagram page. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA

Trump weighed in on the couple’s decision in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham that aired Friday night.

“I think it’s sad,” Trump said. “I do. I think it’s sad. [The Queen’s] a great woman. She’s never made a mistake if you look. I mean, she’s had like a flawless time.”

“You think Harry should go back, come back [to the family]?” Ingraham asked the president.

“Well, I think, you know, I don’t want to get into the whole thing,” Trump replied. “But I find it, I just have such respect for the Queen. I don’t think this should be happening to her.”

It is no secret that Harry and Meghan are steadfast liberals who are not fans of President Trump. Prior to marrying Harry, Meghan was a leftwing Hollywood actress who regularly spoke out against Trump while promoting her television show “Suits.”

Months before the 2016 election, Meghan blatantly slammed Trump in an interview with late night host Larry Wilmore.

“Yes, of course, Trump is divisive, think about female voters alone, right? I think it was in 2012 the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points; that is a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that is a huge chunk of it,” Meghan said at the time.

“You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”

Given how much Harry and Meghan are known to despise him, it comes as no surprise that Trump would choose to side with the Queen over them.
