When running for president in 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump made several major campaign promises. Even his harshest critics admit he’s either achieved those goals or made strong progress toward them.

The American economy and judicial appointments have been handled and dispatched with tremendous success.

He is still fighting with the Dems on other issues such as border security, though he’s achieved much in that area as well.

Now, another pledge is on the brink of breakthrough — as on Sunday the ruling Taliban council in Afghanistan agreed to a temporary ceasefire.

If that accord holds and President Trump is able to bring home the estimated 12,000 U.S. military personnel serving in that nation, he will have accomplished a feat that eluded two former presidents — George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Trump will have overseen a successful American extrication from the morass of the 18-year-old war in Afghanistan.

He also criticized the mission creep in Afghanistan that saw a military operation designed to drive the Taliban from power turn into a nation-building exercise that saw the Taliban actually return to power after being ousted by U.S. forces in 2001.

American forces were deployed to the country initially in response to the terror attacks in New York City on 9/11.

President Trump called off earlier peace talks with the Taliban in September when a terrorist attack in the nation killed a U.S. soldier. Before that incident, both sides soon envisioned a peace pact.

With a ceasefire and likely resumption of talks, that possibility grows stronger, especially with the implicit Taliban acceptance of the main U.S. demand that no regime in control of the country would allow terrorist groups to use Afghanistan as a base of operations.

With this announcement going into a presidential election year, and with voters generally happy if the nation is peaceful and prosperous, an agreement that would see American soldiers, Marines, airmen, and sailors come home from a war zone with their honor intact would substantially increase the president’s already good re-election numbers.

More importantly, American families all over the nation could welcome 12,000 loved ones back home safe and secure.
