Why Pride Puts Us in Opposition to God

Watch out for the blindnesses in life that deceive people into thinking they know more than the Almighty

Pride often prevents us from obtaining the best things in life.

Well, pride puts us in opposition with God.

After all, the Bible says He “resists the proud.”

And since God is the primary source of all goodness, our pride deprives us of His goodness (1 Peter 5:5; 1 Chronicles 16:34).

Why do we do this to ourselves?

For many of us, it’s because our pride has also deceived us into believing that God is not good — so we are unable to recognize the truth about what are the best things in life.

For most of my life, this blindness manifested itself in my destructive decisions to passionately pursue the world because I thought it held the best things in life.

I did not walk away unscarred.

In my pride, I failed to ever find God’s best.

The Bible says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world — the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world”‭‭ (1 John‬ ‭2:15-16‬).

My pride blinded me to seek the things of the world instead of the goodness of God.

But if I had truly believed God’s Word, I could have avoided the destructiveness of my pride.

It says, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs ‬16‬:18‬)‬‬‬‬‬.

Through great personal failure, God graciously taught me humility.

Now, His magnificent love keeps me anchored in it because I am addicted to His presence.

Humility allows me to dwell in God’s presence.

There, God gives me nothing less than the best.
