Is it possible to live a life where our deepest desires are continually and completely satisfied?

God promises us: “The Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail” (Isaiah‬ ‭58:10).

Is God satisfying your desires like finding a spring of fresh water in a scorched desert would satisfy you? ‬‬

If not, why not?

Isaiah 58 explains that unless God’s love works itself so deeply into our soul that it completely transforms us, we will never possess the continual satisfaction He has planned for us.

When His love rules our life, we are not playing religious games like Israel was — when they were fasting and praying and all the while living in pride, oppressing their workers, living for their own pleasure, and fighting among themselves (58:1-5).

Love doesn’t rule us when we choose to live in sin.

When love rules our heart, God’s ways flow through us and our life is an instrument of Him.

His Word says we are His hands: “To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke, to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh” (Isaiah‬ ‭58:6-7‬).

God’s love works through us — and it is so powerful that it satisfies us while we meet the needs of others. ‬‬

This is the essence of love.

And what do we get when we allow God’s love to move through us?

The Bible says our light will break forth like the dawn and gloom will be made as the noonday, our healing will spring up, our righteousness will be known, the glory of God will be our rear guard, God will hear us and answer our prayers, and we will ride on the heights of the earth (8-10, 14).

What a way to live.

Our joy is at an apex when we’re generously giving of our talent, time, and gifts.

Self-sacrifice is the best thing we can do for ourselves because in laying down our life, we gain it.

It may seem like a great contradiction — that giving of ourselves gives us more.

However, it is not.

When we give from God’s heart, we are continually infused with His strength, love, wisdom, and joy as those qualities pass through us — and toward others.
