Once again, NYPD officers have been under attack.

Last summer, we saw the now-infamous “water-dousing” incidents in which thugs hurled water and other items and substances at police officers who were attempting to perform their regular duties as law enforcement representatives.

Now, there’s a new ugliness.

It happened this past Halloween night, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

Someone recorded video of a New York City police patrol vehicle — onto which miscreants had tossed several large boxes of trash.

Two officers in the video can be seen removing the debris from their car — while bystanders are heard laughing and taunting the cops.

One officer says to the bystanders, “Lots of people call 911 in this neighborhood. This is holding us up.”

At least one male on the other side of the camera couldn’t care less about his neighbors. He can be heard saying, “This is what happens in the ‘hood. Police get trashed.”

Then another person taunts, “Trick or treat, motherf******.”

The lack of respect for the NYPD is palpable and demoralizing to cops all over America.

Worse, it’s an inspiration to cop haters all over America.

And that disrespect — actually, a vicious hatred — became even worse the next evening in downtown Brooklyn.

Protesters gathered at around 7 p.m. near the Barclay’s Center. Some demonstrators carried signs reading, “’F*** the police’ and ‘Don’t let these pigs touch us.’”

Someone also scribbled “clever” phrases on a bus such as, “F*** NYPD’ and ‘NYPD KKK.”

The New York Post reported that about 1,000 “anti-police protesters descended on downtown Brooklyn Friday night, blocking traffic, vandalizing a city bus and shouting obscene insults at NYPD cops.”

Demonstrators were protesting a police crackdown on fare evaders on the subway — at least, ostensibly, as if they needed a reason to spew their hate.

Some of the creeps who were marching carried a large, professionally produced cloth banner that read, “Ante Up! Punch that Cop!! NYPD out of MTA.”

Socialist leaders like those politicians in the so-called Democratic squad and the vast array of Democratic Party presidential candidates keep promising free stuff from the government. So these anti-cop protesters now believe that any time they have to pay for anything, they are being ripped off.

They have abdicated any notion of civic or individual responsibility in exchange for irresponsibility, anarchy, and civil unrest.

It’s no surprise that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has come out in favor of the protesters, who openly advocate for violence against police officers, over the cops who serve and protect her city.

AOC tweeted, “Ending mass incarceration means challenging a system that jails the poor to free the rich.” (What the — ?)

She then retweeted a video that included protesters chanting, “How do you spell racist? N-Y-P-D.”

Ocasio-Cortez — an elected congressional lawmaker, mind you — further endorsed the anti-police anarchy by also tweeting, “Arresting people who can’t afford a $2.75 fare makes no-one safer and destabilizes our community.” She added, “New Yorkers know that, they’re not having it and they’re standing up for each other.”

In the video, protesters jumping subway turnstiles can be seen expressing their anger at people who dare to obey the law and pay the fare.

Does AOC really believe it’s a person’s civic responsibility to steal services from the city?

Her cavalier lack of respect for the rule of law is revolting but not surprising.

The NYPD is already hobbled by political leaders who show them not only little support but also outright animosity.

One bright note, in my view, is the recent resignation of NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill. Cops have regarded O’Neill as so firmly entrenched in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s pocket it’s a wonder he wasn’t always covered in lint.

The New York Post reported that the presidents of the Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Police Benevolent Associations — Lt. Lou Turco, Sgt. Ed Mullins, and Ofc. Pat Lynch, respectively — “were unanimous in blaming the surge of hate in large part [on] Mayor de Blasio and other politicians and community leaders — for failing to condemn the anti-cop mobs.”

The incoming police commissioner, Dermot Shea, can’t be optimistic about his future when looking at the soft-on-crime horizon.

He enters his new role anticipating the new “reforms” going into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

One of them is a new law that “eliminates cash bail for low-level and non-violent crimes.”

Every cop, from the rookie on foot beat to the new commish, can predict the rise in crime that’s sure to accompany such a foolish law.

If the NYPD hasn’t yet reached its breaking point, it has to be close. Without the support from above for a pushback against cop haters and a follow-through with prosecutions, incidents such as these will only escalate.

But without support from the mayor, is there any hope these attacks will stop? I mean, why would they?

Criminals get away with as much as they can.

In New York City, they also get away with as much as Mayor Bill de Blasio will let them — which is an awful lot, with an emphasis on awful.
