God’s Word will never be deeply engrained into our hearts if we limit ourselves to only reading or hearing it.

We must also do what’s in it to develop habits of the soul.

Think about it.

If you’re learning to cook and you just read (or even memorize) a recipe book — can you say you know how to cook?

No. You don’t learn to cook until you’ve been in the kitchen.

Life is our kitchen.

And the Bible has all of the best recipes for soul food.

The book of James says: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing” (James‬ ‭1:22-25‬).

If the Bible never permeates our lifestyle, then we are “deceived” and we have forgotten — or, perhaps never even discovered — who God made us to be.

God gives us our true identity.
