Liberals are very out of touch with the rest of America, it seems to me.
Case in point: The University of Virginia decided to cancel the 21-gun salute portion of a campus ceremony on Veterans Day because of “gun violence.”
The university president took to Facebook about it.
He wrote a rambling reason as to why the salute was canceled.
He could have just said, “We’re all crazy liberals,” in my view — and left it at that.
If he did that, people would have understood the decision much more quickly.
“Related to this year’s ceremony, the Provost’s Office and Col. Michael Hough, commanding officer of UVA’s Air Force ROTC detachment, worked closely together in making the decision to eliminate the 21-gun salute for two reasons: first, to minimize disruptions to classes, given that this event is located at the juncture of four primary academic buildings and is held at a time that classes are in session; and second, recognizing concerns related to firing weapons on the grounds in light of gun violence that has happened across our nation, especially on school and university campuses,” wrote the president of the university, James E. Ryan.
He alleged that organizers for the ROTC-led event considered a different location.

He said they opted to keep the central location but leave out the 21-gun salute, a tradition at the school for over a decade.
“That seemed to me, and still seems, a reasonable accommodation, given the 24-hour vigil and other solemn and respectful elements of the ceremony,” Ryan wrote.
He added that UVA officials plan to “take a closer look” at options for celebrating Veterans Day for next year — “including those that would enable us to re-introduce the 21-gun salute to the program.”

Ryan received a lot a lot of negative feedback on Facebook and Twitter for the school’s stupid decision, in my opinion.
“In response to concerns about the cancellation of the 21-gun salute portion of the Veterans Day ceremony, I thought it might be useful to pass along some background on how we reached the decision,” he wrote.

And here is what a few people shared about it all on social media.
“As a veteran and an employee of UVA, I am embarrassed.”

“As a @UVA #UVA student veteran, thank you for marginalizing my community. That is a direct, unmitigated slap in the face to those of us who have served, and especially to those of us who have served and lost. I am deeply sorry that you decided to make this incorrect decision,” wrote another person.

“Unfortunately again, I disagree with your decision. I dare say it would do all of your students well to have a moment to remember those that perished for their freedom. If it were not for them your classes may well have been empty!” said still another.

“Total nonsense. Give me a break,” said another person.

“The background is not useful. Pathetic elements of the community, who are able to whine because men with guns have protected their liberty for centuries, should have been ignored. How sick is the university that such people dictate how to celebrate our nation’s heroes? Shameful,” said another individual, mincing no words.
