Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres spoke out on Monday to defend her friendship with former President George W. Bush

She did so after liberals went after her for sitting next to him at a football game.

Now, the former president has said the DeGeneres comments about him were “appreciated.”

Bush reportedly thanked DeGeneres through a spokesperson after leftists slammed the comedian for sitting next to him at the Dallas Cowboys-Green Bay Packers football game on Sunday.

“President and Mrs. Bush really enjoyed being with Ellen and Portia [de Rossi] and appreciated Ellen’s comments about respecting one another,” the spokesperson told Fox News.

“They respect her,” the spokesperson also said.

This came one day after DeGeneres defended her “friend” Bush on her TV show.

“When we were invited, I was aware that I was going to be surrounded with people from very different views and beliefs. And I’m not talking about politics … I was rooting for the Packers,” DeGeneres said jokingly to her audience.

“So I had to hide my cheese hat in Portia’s purse.”

She went on to acknowledge that “people were upset” to see her sitting next to Bush.

“They thought, ‘Why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president?'” she said.

“A lot of people were mad. And they did what people do when they’re mad … They tweet,” DeGeneres said in her monologue to her audience.

“Here’s the thing: I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have,” she added.

“We’re all different and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK that we’re all different … But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them.”

“When I say, ‘Be kind to one another,’ I don’t mean only [to] the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone,” DeGeneres said.

“Doesn’t matter.”

Virtually all of the backlash DeGeneres received was from liberals — they were furious she was fraternizing with a conservative president.

Meanwhile, Bush faced virtually no backlash from conservatives — who had no problem with him sitting next to a liberal gay woman.

This shows perfectly just how closed-minded those on the Left has become to people who think differently than they do.

DeGeneres deserves praise for having the courage to fight back against the liberal Twitter mob by defending her conservative friend.

If only more liberals could be like her.
