Evangelist Franklin Graham — a son of the late faith leader Billy Graham — warned that impeaching President Donald Trump could cause the United States to “begin to unravel.”
Graham shared his thoughts with the Religion News Service (RNS) on Wednesday.
“Our country could begin to unravel if an elected president is thrown out of office because of lies and the media,” Graham also said.
“It could be a devastating thing. We’re in very dangerous territory. I would encourage all the politicians to look very carefully at where we are and first of all make sure that truth is told.”
Graham accused the House Democrats and other Dems of refusing to accept the outcome of the 2016 presidential election — and he criticized the ongoing impeachment inquiry.
“This is nothing about nothing,” Graham said.
“It’s just a huge distraction. The Democratic Party has refused to accept that [Trump] won the election.”
“All the media and the polls showed he was going to lose and he won. He should be treated fairly and he hasn’t been,” he also said.
Graham shared his thoughts during a stop on his eight-city Decision America Tour through his home state of North Carolina — “which he described as an effort to ask people to commit their lives to Jesus and to pray for the country,” as RNS noted.
This past Tuesday, he preached to an estimated 9,200 people in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
And on Sunday, he’ll speak at an amphitheater in Raleigh, the state capital.
He concludes the tour on October 13 with a rally in Asheville.
“Graham’s defense of the president echoed that of fellow evangelical Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas, who has warned of a potential civil war if the House votes on impeachment and who has accused Democrats of worshipping the pagan god Moloch,” as the Religion News Service also noted.
Graham’s comments come during an extraordinary week of almost non-stop impeachment-connected activity — and the week isn’t over yet.
The so-called whistleblower who filed the complaint about Trump’s July 25 phone call with the Ukrainian president and around which the entire efforts are focused has been revealed to be a registered Democrat, “a source familiar with the ongoing investigation told CNN Thursday,” as Jake Tapper of CNN reported on Thursday afternoon.
“The intelligence community’s inspector general, Michael Atkinson, acknowledged an indication of possible political bias in his assessment of the complaint but made clear that it did not change his overall conclusion that it appeared to be credible,” Tapper also noted.
This latest news came out late Thursday afternoon — and its impact is still reverberating.
Trump, for his part, has always maintained that this case was politically biased against him.
