‘What Does God Think Is Beautiful?’

When I have my morning quiet time outside on my back deck, I’m often overwhelmed by the beauty manifested in creation [1].

One morning, I watched the sunrise from the east color the storm clouds from the west in pink, yellow, purple, and a rainbow of unnameable colors in between.

The clouds were periodically illuminated by lightning, momentarily capturing the sharp contrast between the darkness and the light.

Meanwhile, the fog from the river bottom canopied the lush, green valley and filled it almost to the top of the mountains.

Both the fog and the mountaintops were flung with random patches of golden sunlight.

As the storm clouds swept up the valley, the distant thunder heralded the rain and a cool breeze caressed my face.

My words can’t adequately capture the beauty of that morning I spent in God’s sanctuary.

Beauty is indeed in God’s sanctuary.

The Bible says, “The Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary” (Psalms 96:5-6).

This dazzling spectacle of creation made me wonder, “What does God think is beautiful?”

His Word answers this question: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns’” (Isaiah‬ ‭52:7‬).

When we glorify God, we are beautiful beyond any physical visage imaginable to the human eye.

It’s amazing to know that God gives us all, each one of us, the opportunity to be beautiful.

It’s not found in what we wear, in our age, in the shape of our body or in the color of our hair.

When we glorify God, we are beautiful beyond any physical visage imaginable to the human eye.

Just as creation manifests God’s beauty, we are also most beautiful when we are so lost in Him that when others see us — they marvel at His magnificent beauty.
