During a “Keep America Great” rally for his supporters in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Monday night, President Donald Trump trolled the media and triggered Democrats by floating the idea of a third term for his administration.
He was only “kidding,” as he later explained — in case some people were already in an uproar.
Former President Barack Obama said the same thing and the media looked the other way — but you can be sure they’re going after Trump, in my view, as if he would do something to hurt the country.
If you aren’t a Trump supporter or are a middle-of-a-road independent, you’d think Trump was serious.
Yet most of us see this as a dig at the media to fill their fake news segments.
Trump brought up this notion of an extended stay at the White House, he said, in an earlier meeting with Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, the world soccer governing body.
The U.S. is set to host the 2026 World Cup men’s championship, the largest event in global sports, in conjunction with Canada and Mexico — and it looks to be the biggest event in the world.
Said Trump on Monday night, “We’ve got a problem — it’s in 2026. I said, ‘Well, wait a minute. Under the normal rules, I’ll be out in 2024. So we may have to go for an extra term, OK?’”
Added the president, “Oh, they’re going crazy, they’re going crazy. Tomorrow you’re going to see headlines: ‘Trump wants an extra term! I told you, I told you. He wants it.’”
“’He wants an extra term, ladies and gentlemen. We told you! We told you he’s a dictator. We told you!'”
“Nah, nah. I’m only kidding. I’m only kidding,” added Trump.

Most Americans know that the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951, set a two-term limit for the presidency — and Trump isn’t looking to break any laws.
The soccer championship is one of the few times people in countries around the world come together and watch their own nation compete on a global stage.
Said Trump, “It’s the biggest sporting event in the world and we’ve got it, and it’s great. We’re working it also with Mexico, Canada, giving them some of the games. We’re going to have a great relationship with the World Cup. It’s a big deal.”
Infantino told U.S. reporters it would be not just the world’s biggest sports event — but also the biggest social event.
When you expect more than four billion people around the world watching these games, that’s a huge party.
Preliminary plans have the U.S. hosting 60 games in 10 cities, while Canada and Mexico will host 10 games each.
The decision to break this up is the first time in history the competition will be shared among three countries — and let’s not forget the expanded roster of 48 national teams fighting for the trophy.
