Fox News anchor Shepard Smith apparently believes it’s his mission to set the record straight if President Donald Trump says something that he — Smith — doesn’t personally like or agree with, as evidenced by this latest example.

Smith “fact-checked” the president for his recent claim that Russia was removed from the G8 because “Russia outsmarted President [Barack] Obama.”

Russia was ejected from the G8, as the group was once known, after it invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014.

Russia had been a member of the coalition for nearly 20 years, as the Washington Examiner and other outlets pointed out.

But the president addressed the notion of Russia’s being brought back into the group sometime in the future during a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday morning.

Trump also suggested that idea as well last week, ahead of the G7 weekend meeting of nations in Biarritz, France.

“That was outsmarting Obama. Russia outsmarted President Obama,” said Trump. “They took over during his term, not during mine. They took over Crimea.”

“The fact is President [Vladimir] Putin totally outsmarted President Obama on Crimea and other things, including the red line in the sand,” Trump also said.

And last week in the Oval Office, during a visit by the Romanian president to Washington, D.C., Trump said to reporters,  “I could certainly see it being the G8 again … As you know, for most of the time it was the G8 and it included Russia. And President Obama didn’t want Russia in because he got outsmarted. Well, that’s not really the way it should work.”

Well — Smith didn’t like those comments or this line of reasoning very much.

On the other hand, speaking about the G7, check out the words of Fox Business Network’s Stuart Varney — who shared a message with Americans after many other people criticized Trump’s work this past weekend at the G7.

“No matter what you read and hear from the media, this G7 was all about Trump re-aligning the world — reshaping the world economy with America’s interests first and foremost,” declared Varney on Fox Nation’s “My Take.”

Varney also stressed that “trade was the headline issue … A deal with Japan — they will import a lot more of our agricultural product. Britain gets a major trade deal after Brexit, and there’s dialogue with Germany on car tariffs as well, but the most important — China.”

America’s European allies should get on board with the president’s agenda, Varney believes. “Europeans are frankly scared of America. Their economies are sinking,” he said, as Fox News reported. “They’ve entered the fantasy land of negative interest rates. Their money is pouring over here, and they just don’t know what to do.  My advice: Jump on the Trump train and quit whining about Iran and climate change.”
