‘My Life Can Be God’s Beautiful Garden or It Can Be a Useless Patch of Weeds’

Woman Praying

One morning as I walked by my neglected flower beds, I could see only small patches of the beautiful flowers I’d planted. The weeds had choked out the beauty.

It was a great visual of a spiritual truth [1].

My life can be God’s beautiful garden — or it can be an ugly, useless patch of weeds.

The choice is mine!

To be beautiful, the garden of my heart requires daily watering, weeding and fertilizing.

Am I investing the time to make my garden beautiful?

Or is it dominated by the weeds of the world?

God is the only one who makes us truly beautiful.

In the Book of Isaiah, God gives us a picture of what our life looks like when we pluck out the wicked weeds and passionately pursue Him.

“Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer,” the Bible tells us in this passage. “You shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away … the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail” (Isaiah 58:9-11).

A Christian whose heart is in love with God is like “a watered garden,” a “light that shines in darkness” and a “spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”

I don’t know about you — but I’ve spent a lot of my life using the blessings God has given me to grow ugly weeds.

But when my soul cried out to God and He became the greatest passion of my life, I was transformed into a completely different person.

God is the only one who makes us truly beautiful.

When the garden of our heart is bright with His sunshine, and it is watered, fed and weeded by His Word — it becomes a place of beauty, peace and nurturing.
