American actress Meghan Markle, who married into the U.K.’s royal family last year, is being called a hypocrite for her repeated use of a private jet — even though she brands herself as an advocate for environmental issues.

Markle, who became a duchess after her marriage to Prince Harry of Windsor, flew on two private jets in just two days with her husband and their new son, Archie.

The royals spent more than $16 million (in U.S. dollars) on the plane trips, which took them to the South of France for vacation after they visited Ibiza in Spain. The Daily Mail reported that the trip created seven times more emissions per person than a commercial flight.

The couple has come under intense scrutiny given their comments about needing to protect the environment.

The trip is the second time this month the royal couple used the private jet company, which is called “Uber for billionaires.” They flew using the same company on August 6, when they visited a luxury villa in Spain. Perks of the airline include custom dining menus and the option of having pets in the cabin.

Once the royal couple arrived at their destination, they were guarded by taxpayer-funded security.

This is not the first time Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been in the spotlight for these reasons. Ironically, Harry after he used a private plane to get to Sicily for a Google climate meeting several months ago despite preaching to U.K. citizens about global warming.

On several occasions, he lectured average citizens about lowering their carbon footprints.

Several public figures spoke out against the duchess and her husband openly.

Teresa Pearce, Labour MP for Erith and Thamesmead, said, “Given the position they have taken publicly about being responsible on climate change, this does seem an anomaly, which they should look at. I find this quite surprising because it doesn’t fit with their public image and the way they’re so concerned about the planet and the environment.”

Ken Wharfe, a former royal protection officer, added, “Frankly, it’s hypocritical. Harry can’t be preaching about the catastrophic effects of climate change while jetting around the world on a private plane.”

Piers Morgan, perhaps the U.K.’s most influential and prominent journalist, has also been vocal in calling out Markle.

Morgan has repeatedly stated that Markle is doing damage to the royal family by not following protocol, and even compared her to Marie Antoinette in his influential Daily Mail column.

The royal family refused to comment, nor will they reveal how much the trip cost British taxpayers.

Markle has been heavily scrutinized during her short time as a royal; most of the negative comments are about her luxurious lifestyle choices and the bucking of royal tradition.
