Kamala Harris Is Uncomfortable with the ‘Medicare for All’ Bill She Co-Sponsored

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), a 2020 Democratic hopeful, [1] told donors on Sunday she was uncomfortable with the Medicare for All plan introduced by fellow presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

But she apparently forgot she co-sponsored his bill.

“I have not been comfortable with Bernie’s plan,” the Democratic senator from California (shown above right) said Sunday at a fundraiser in the Hamptons, as reported [3] by Bloomberg.

Yet, not only did Harris co-sponsor Bernie’s bill, she was the first Democrat in the Senate [4] to do so in 2017.

She has even bragged about being the first to sign on.

“I believe in capitalism, but capitalism is not working for most people,” Harris also told the group of donors before appearing to reject the socialist-tinged health plan [2] she signed on to in the U.S. Senate.

Here’s our feeling: You are either for a more socialized health care system — or you are not.

Harris seems to be trying to have it both ways.

Flip-flopping on issues that include health care is nothing new for Harris.

She once said she wanted to abolish private insurance — before walking back her statement.

Just last week, Harris told The Washington Post she was “committed to reining in the private insurance companies.”

But she also wanted Americans to be able to choose insurers.

Though Harris now says she is uncomfortable with Sanders’ health plan, she remains a co-sponsor of Medicare for all, which would do away with private insurance and replace it with a single-payer health care system.

“You can’t make this up,” tweeted Sanders’ speechwriter David Sirota, in response to Harris’ comments to donors.

What she might say about health care can obviously change in any given moment — but what does her weekend comment about this bill say about Kamala Harris [12]?

It reminds us she will say whatever she thinks is politically beneficial — with no real commitment to what she pledges.

Liberal activist Ben Spielberg tweeted, “I am not comfortable with presidential candidates who tell rich donors that they never intended to make the Medicare for All plan they co-sponsored a reality.”

“Progressives distrust @KamalaHarris [15] because her record and strong ties to the corporate wing of the Democratic Party belie her progressive rhetoric and posturing,” Spielberg continued in another tweet.

“We cannot afford a president who sounds like she wants to do the right thing while actively working to undermine it.”

Progressives shouldn’t trust Sen. Kamala Harris. If she becomes the Democrats’ presidential nominee, no one else should either.
