Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) toured a detention center at the southern border the other day — and called the conditions there “inhumane.”

He also tweeted a video from his tour, declaring, “This is heart-wrenching. This is wrong. This is not who we are.”

“This has to end now,” he also said.

But Schumer didn’t stop there. He said even though authorities tried to “make things look better” the day before his and the other Dems’ visit, the conditions were still appalling.

“They’re treating [these people] like criminals,” Schumer said from the border, as Politico reported. “And if you listened to the president you’d think they were all criminals. They’re not. They’re people simply seeking some … honor, decency for their children.”

Late on Sunday, President Donald Trump — seizing on those remarks and on a serious border incident over the weekend — said on Twitter he is going to set up a meeting with Schumer.

“I will set up a meeting ASAP!” the president said.

Schumer joined a group of a dozen Senate Democrats at the border this past Friday and said the tour was “difficult.”

He told members of the media that seeing children held in poor conditions pulled at the heartstrings, as Fox News reported.

Trump explained that while Schumer was touring a facility, a “large group of illegal immigrants” rushed border agents and tried to force their way into the U.S.

The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge connects the southern Texas city of Pharr to Reynosa, Mexico; it was temporarily closed on Friday after a group of nearly 50 undocumented individuals tried to enter the U.S., KGBT noted, citing a statement from Border Patrol.

Agents were forced to use tear gas to stop the group from entering illegally, the report said.

“Ignoring commands to stop, the group suddenly rushed the temporary barricades, bent metal poles and disabled the concertina wire affixed to the barrier,” an official said over the weekend.

CBP officers, Border Patrol agents, Pharr police and members of the Texas Department of Public Safety were all called upon to prevent the group’s entry, according to the official.

“Several males in the group disregarded commands to stop and physically pushed through the barriers,” the official also said, according to Fox News reports.

“Name one thing that Chuck Schumer has done to solve this crisis or address this crisis than vilify the men and women at Border Patrol,” said Tom Homan.

Trump stressed the importance of acting as soon as possible — something he has long emphasized.

“Based on the comments made by Sen. Schumer, he must have seen how dangerous & bad for our country the border is,” Trump tweeted. “It is not a ‘manufactured crisis,’ as the Fake News media & their Democrat partners tried to portray.”

And see this tweet from Tomi Lahren on the border issue:

Tom Homan, former head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told Fox News the problem at the border is due to the ineptitude of Congress.

“Name one thing that Chuck Schumer has done to solve this crisis or address this crisis than vilify the men and women at Border Patrol,” Homan said.

He said Congress ignored the agency’s repeated and earlier requests for more funding to address the surge of border crossers.

And as an op-ed writer for LifeZette recently pointed out about many of the 2020 Democrats running for the White House, “If you think there is a crisis at our southern border now, just think about what would happen if one of these overt or covert ‘open borderists’ became president.”
