Megan Rapino, the U.S. women’s soccer team star, made clear on CNN on Tuesday night that the team has zero interest in going to the White House because they don’t want their “platform” to be “corrupted” by the Trump administration.
If you know nothing about Rapinoe, then know that during the women’s World Cup tournament, she made headlines by claiming she’s “not going to the f***ing White House.”
She later apologized for the profanity but not the sentiment.
MORE NEWS: Why the riots?
Rapinoe explained to CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday night that all the teammates she spoke with about this told her they wouldn’t to go to the White House either.
Said Rapinoe, “I don’t think anyone on the team has any interest in lending the platform that we’ve worked hard to build and the things that we fight for and the way that we live our life. I don’t think we want that to be co-opted or corrupted by this administration.”
Cooper of CNN of course pressed her to make more outlandish statements toward the president. So she also said, as if she were addressing Trump, “Your message is excluding people. You’re excluding me. You’re excluding people that look like me. You’re excluding people of color.”
Rapinoe mentioned the Make America Great Again slogan and repeated the talking points that most of us have heard via CNN, MSNBC or even the Democratic Party on how “that was not great for everyone.”
Cooper mentioned that Rapinoe had received invites from such Democrats as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to visit the House of Representatives — and if they would take them up on that.
Rapinoe replied, “Yes to AOC, yes to Nancy Pelosi, yes to the bipartisan Congress, yes to Chuck Schumer, yes to anyone else that wants to invite us and have a substantive conversation and believe in the same things we believe in.”
I don’t think anyone really cares about Rapinoe except the Democratic Party — and they will use this short period of time to trot out these women out like props, as they’ve done with minorities for years.
But after the shine wears off, Rapinoe will be just some woman in suburban America living the “I used to be” life, in my opinion.
