It is perhaps not surprising that the current Democratic front-runner for the 2020 nomination would go after the president of the United States, a Republican, on the Fourth of July — but to many people, it’s deeply disappointing.
Former Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday slammed President Donald Trump’s “Salute to America” event at the Lincoln Memorial on July 4, claiming the spectacle “misse[d] the point” of the national holiday.
Speaking in Marshalltown, Iowa, to a few hundred supporters, Biden ripped into Trump’s July 4 celebration in Washington, D.C.
He said it was “designed more to stroke” the president’s ego than to celebrate America’s independence and birthday.

“I wonder what Donald Trump will say [on Thursday] evening, when he speaks to the nation at an event designed more to stroke his ego than celebrate American ideals,” Biden said, as Fox News and other outlets reported.
“The 76-year-old Biden, in well-worn running shoes, zigzagged across a parade route in Independence, Iowa, often jogging from curb to curb, sometimes trotting backward,” as Fox noted.
He also apparently posed for an endless series of photos with people who came out to see him.

Yet plenty of Americans enjoyed and appreciated the event on the evening of July 4 as the nation celebrated its 243rd birthday.
“What’s wrong with pausing for a few hours to celebrate our nation and all that we stand for?” said one New York-based father of four and a military veteran. “It seems anything this president does or tries to do, Democrats object and go after him for — and that’s just wrong. It’s gotten so tiresome,” he added.
